about

Linear Obsessional is delighted to present the latest work from the maverick Siberian born, British composer Sam Fendrich.
In a message to LinOb Sam wrote -"One of the few upsides of this strange era is that I’ve had the opportunity both to benefit in a (I hope) creative spurt (eg i’m on cd no: 10 and counting of my “MONK project”) - but more importantly I’ve reviewed and reconsidered my work of the recent past. The upshot is that i’ve concluded that a two part work entitled “ the changing of the avant-garde” is the most representative and central to my thinking/work musical and otherwise..."

The result is as dynamic, puzzling, ferocious, compulsive and just plain weird as anything Sam has produced in the past, if not more so.
Free jazz piano crashes over warped electrofunk workouts - distorted, unplaceable instruments weave through an undergrowth of clattering and insistant backdrops - on "The Loneliest Non" a scrabbling rock figure on a hugely distorted piano battles through eerie string chords, a disembodied voice, and at least one meandering Fender Rhodes...
Part Two features much more "jazz piano" - stylistically flying around with enormous gusto, as the background changes from creeped out hip-hop to maudlin electronica.
It's an extraordinary journey - and quite unlike anything else.

the changing of the avant garde sam fendrich

times
disappearing beyond conceivable horizons
forgotten but not gone
beyond eventuality’s horizon too
and so my times
as memory of futures
at this fixed point
fixed pointlessness of this now
and
for our present present
there’s no present like the time
and the changing of the avant garde
*

times
no gift their present
wrapped in obscure prescience
they expect the expected
as eyes in solitudes do not
or as i
not guilty of innocence
and
shrouded in asymptomatic posterity
reveal an apocalyptic vision of utopia
amidst the dreams come false
and the changing of the avant garde
*

times
to the speech of freedom
dictates the necessity of passing life
composing the music of mortality
from the choreography of loves
and the gambits of possession
and
so the mystery of the moment is questioned
in a rush towards a never receding circle
of fearful ecstasy
each his own panic of unrealisation
and mine
confined within collapsing existential spaces
there’s no present like the
times
and the changing of the avant garde
