T9 “MMIINNGGUUSS GGRREEEENN”
What is this or What was that? This piece is the end of many 'musical' threads mainly in my 'head' and some realized. But perhaps more importantly I hope it to be a beginning. What is a beginning? In mathematics and often in music we climb up a ladder and then we kick the ladder away and right there can be a beginning. It's clear to me that you should cherish ladders - and it's a mistake to take this as essentially sentimentality/nostalgia/fear....
So what is this piece about? Nothing! That's the official line. (That's my story - but I'm not sticking to it.) Because the occasion for writing this piece started (as all good mysteries should) with a phone call. My friend Mick 'the sailor' Green rang to invite me to his 70th (so what) birthday party. This triggered something - it's a long story and complicated - whatever - - however - I started to think of our musical beginnings together (we played endless rounds of what used to be called 'free jazz') and in particular I recalled how at the age of fifteen I first heard the opening notes of the Mingus Ah Um album and that was that. But what was what? I question my answer even before it's even been inchoately formulated. But it was a difference and indelible. And that's the thing with the piece..you see...and when I question why/what/how the music I immediately return to that few moments and also the 'spirit' of the music of Mick 'the sailor' Green and i and the thing is, I mean the question is 'What's Changed?' and the answer is, I joyfully realised, - nothing......except perhaps everything else.
